How to bridge to Polygon

Highlights

  • There are numerous secure and straightforward ways to bridge funds to the Polygon blockchain.
  • You can use the official Polygon Bridge which lets you transfer funds between the Ethereum Network and Polygon. However, it only supports the Ethereum chain which has higher gas fees.
  • If you want to use other chains, you can find a trusted third-party bridge like Rango Exchange. Rango supports 60+ blockchains like Arbitrum, Binance Chain, and Optimism, helping you save on gas fees.

How to Bridge to Polygon (TL;DR)

  1. Choose a bridge and connect your crypto wallet (MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, etc).
  2. Choose the network you want to transfer tokens from (Ethereum, Arbitrum, Binance Chain, etc).
  3. Select the token you want to bridge to Polygon and enter the amount.
  4. Review and approve the transaction in your wallet.

What Are The Fees?

To bridge funds from one chain to another, network fees are required and they vary from blockchain to blockchain. Bridging from Ethereum Mainnet can cost between $5 and $30, depending how busy it is. However, Layer 2 networks like Arbitrum or Avalanche will only cost a dollar or less.

Once you have funds on Polygon and wish to transact, you need to have MATIC to pay for gas fees. According to PolygonScan, the average gas fee over the last 24 hours was 141 Gwei (0.00000013 ETH). You can also visit Polygon's Gas Tracker for real-time updates.

Best Polygon Bridges

Polygon is a popular Layer 2 network, so you can find dozens of bridges with Polygon integrated. Here are the best cross-chain bridges to get your funds from point A to point B:

1. Native Polygon Bridge

Polygon Portal Bridge

If you want to use the official bridge from Polygon, you can transfer assets between Ethereum, Polygon, and Polygon zkEVM. It lets you transfer any ERC-20 token like ETH, USDT, and USDC.

While it's created by the Polygon team, it doesn't support multiple chains like Rango and third-party bridges listed below. You can only transfer assets from Ethereum, which will have higher gas fees than other networks. When I tested it, the ETH gas fee would have been $60.21!

How To Use It

  1. Go to the official Polygon Portal Bridge and connect your wallet
  2. Enter the token and amount you want to send
  3. Select where you want to send to (Polygon POS or Polygon zkEVM)
  4. Click the Bridge button and confirm the transaction in your wallet

If it's your first time using Polygon, make sure you get MATIC in your wallet to pay for gas fees.

2. Rango Exchange

Rango Exchange Bridge

If you want multi-chain support, Rango is my favorite Polygon bridge because it will compare rates on dozens of bridges and DEXs so you can choose the best prices. It also supports 60+ blockchains, which is more than any protocol on this list, allowing you to send funds from any network.

You can transfer assets between Polygon and Optimism, Solana, zkSync, and many other chains. You can also send USDC and have it swapped for MATIC or any token of your choice at the best rates.

How To Use It

  1. Go to Rango Exchange and connect your wallet
  2. In the "From" section, select the token, network, and amount you want to send
  3. In the "To" section, select "Polygon" and "MATIC"
  4. Rango will show you the best quotes. If you like it, click "Swap" or click the refresh button to find new routes
  5. Review the transaction and click confirm. Then, approve in your wallet.

If Rango is not working, check the route you selected. If the route involves multiple chains, ensure your wallet has funds on each chain for gas. Otherwise, you can cancel the transaction and choose a different route.

3. RhinoFi

RhinoFi Bridge to Starknet

RhinoFi is a Layer 2 bridging protocol that supports 15+ major chains like Ethereum, Polygon, and opBNB. They've attracted 1+ million wallets$2.3B in total volume, and over 48M transactions. While it doesn't support as many chains as Rango, it's a good alternative and fast bridge with transactions under 60 seconds.

It works like any other bridge and they are backed by top names like StarkWare, Consensys (creators of MetaMask) and Ledger. While RhinoFi is primarily a bridge, they offer DeFi features as well like swaps, liquid staking, airdrop tracking tools, and more.

How To Use It

  1. Go to RhinoFi and connect your wallet
  2. Select the token and network you want to send from
  3. Select Polygon under the "Receive" section
  4. Submit the transaction and approve it in your wallet

Funds should arrive in 60 seconds or less.

Other Polygon Bridges

Here is a list of other Polygon bridges you can check out:

What Is Polygon?

Polygon is a an Ethereum layer 2 blockchain that aims to enhance the performance of Ethereum. It focuses on increasing transaction speed and decreasing fees when using decentralized applications (dapps) and smart contracts. It features its own cryptocurrency, MATIC, which is used for transaction fees, staking, and governance purposes.

According to PolygonScan, the network has over 400M unique addresses and tens of thousands of dapps. As of this writing, Polygon has over $950M in total value locked (TVL) according to Defi Llama.

Final Thoughts

Bridging crypto to Polygon is straightforward using the native Polygon Bridge or a secure third-party bridge. Since Polygon is a popular Layer 2 blockchain, it's supported on dozens of bridging protocols. The process only takes a few minutes and doesn't have to be expensive.
